My work is influenced by the symbolic and historical representations of humanity in works by Caravaggio, Van Dyck, Holbein, Georges de la Tour and Rembrandt, but also in the more painterly representations in works by Andrew Salgado, Conor Harrington, Christian Hook and David Hockney.I am intrigued by what paint can do, how it can become hair, skin, clothes etc, but I still want it to be essentially paint i.e. fluid and gestural.
I begin each piece with a vision in mind, but allow the materials and my instincts to guide me as I work. There is a battle between representation and abstraction therefore my work can be a frenetic journey of working, correcting, erasing, and reworking. This carries on until I am content with both the mark making and how the subject is represented.
